Sciatica

Sciatica – Natural Relief for Leg Pain, Nerve Compression & Mobility Issues

“My leg hurts, tingles, or feels numb – is it sciatica?”

Sciatica refers to pain that radiates along the sciatic nerve, which runs from your lower back down through your hips, buttocks, and each leg. It’s not a condition in itself, but a symptom of an underlying issue—often involving irritation, inflammation, or compression of the nerve roots in your lumbar spine.

Common Signs of Sciatica:

  • Pain that shoots from your lower back into your buttock and leg

  • Numbness, tingling, or “pins and needles” in the leg or foot

  • Muscle weakness in the leg or difficulty lifting the foot (“foot drop”)

  • Pain worsening when sitting or standing for long periods

  • Symptoms affecting one side of the body

What Causes Sciatica?

Sciatica can arise from several spinal and musculoskeletal conditions, including:

  • Lumbar disc herniation (slipped disc) – when the disc material presses on the nerve root

  • Degenerative disc disease – leading to inflammation and nerve compression

  • Spinal stenosis – narrowing of the spinal canal

  • Pelvic misalignment or joint dysfunction – which can distort nerve pathways

  • Piriformis syndrome – where the muscle compresses the sciatic nerve

  • Pregnancy-related pelvic changes – hormonal and postural shifts can aggravate the sciatic nerve

How We Can Help at Living Chiropractic

At Living Chiropractic, we take a holistic, conservative approach to managing sciatica, using the Gonstead Chiropractic method to locate the precise area of nerve pressure and correct underlying joint dysfunction.

Chiropractic for Sciatica Relief:

✔️ Thorough spinal assessment – including posture, nerve testing, and X-rays if clinically indicated
✔️ Precise adjustments – Gonstead adjustments restore spinal alignment and nerve function
✔️ Pelvic and lumbar corrections – addressing sacroiliac or vertebral joint misalignments
✔️ Nerve decompression strategies – promoting healing and reducing inflammation
✔️ Collaboration with myotherapists and remedial massage – to support muscular balance and recovery

We aim to reduce nerve irritation and improve mobility—helping you return to work, exercise, and sleep comfortably again.

Left Untreated: Muscle Wasting & Surgical Risk

When severe sciatica goes untreated, the muscles in the affected leg can weaken or reduce in size over time—especially the calf, gluteal or quadriceps muscles. This may indicate nerve damage and, in rare cases, can become a surgical emergency if there is progressive neurological loss.

According to a 2020 review in The New England Journal of Medicinesurgery may be considered if there is:

  • Loss of bladder or bowel control (cauda equina syndrome)

  • Progressive leg weakness

  • Intractable pain not relieved by conservative care after 6–12 weeks

However, most cases improve with conservative care. A 2021 meta-analysis published in Spine Journal found that manual therapy, including chiropractic care, significantly improved pain and function in patients with lumbar disc herniation and sciatica compared to usual care or passive treatments.

Medical Perspective on Sciatica

Definition: Sciatica is a set of symptoms involving the sciatic nerve, typically caused by compression or irritation of the lumbar nerve roots (L4–S3). The pain may be sharp, burning, electric-like, or deep and aching.

When is surgery indicated?

  • Significant motor loss or muscle wasting

  • Cauda equina syndrome

  • Failure to improve with appropriate conservative management (after 6–12 weeks)

Research-Backed Chiropractic Benefits for Sciatica

  • A study in the European Spine Journal (2014) showed that patients receiving spinal manipulative therapy for acute sciatica had significantly better outcomes in terms of pain and disability reduction than those receiving standard medical care.

  • A 2022 study in Pain Physician Journal reported that chiropractic adjustments helped reduce pain and improve quality of life in patients with chronic sciatica.

  • The American College of Physicians now recommends non-drug treatments, such as spinal manipulation, as a first-line therapy for low back-related leg pain, including sciatica.
